What Is a Block in a Blockchain?

Why you should know this

The word “blockchain” becomes less mysterious when we separate the block from the chain.

A block is a batch of accepted data

A block commonly contains a group of transactions plus information the network uses to check and order that group.

The exact contents vary by blockchain. A block is not a physical box, and it does not usually contain coins. It contains records and references.

The chain links history

Blocks include cryptographic references connected to earlier blocks. Changing an old record would affect those links and conflict with copies of the accepted history.

This structure helps participants detect changes. Consensus rules still determine which proposed block becomes part of the canonical history.

A familiar example

Think of numbered pages in a tamper-evident logbook. Each new page summarizes a link to the previous page. Replacing page 10 after page 100 would disturb the later chain of references.

One limit to remember

“In a block” does not always mean economically final. Services can wait for more confirmations, and different networks have different finality models.

How this connects to market mastery

Block timing and confirmation depth later affect transfer status, execution and on-chain interpretation.

Quick check — no money needed
