What Does Money Actually Do?

Why you should know this

Crypto makes more sense after we understand the problem money is trying to solve. Prices, payments and savings all rely on these basic jobs.

Three jobs, one useful tool

Money is commonly used as a medium of exchange. It lets two people trade without each person finding exactly what the other wants. A sari-sari store can accept pesos, then use those pesos somewhere else.

Money also acts as a unit of account. Prices written in pesos let us compare rice, transport and mobile data using one scale.

Finally, money can be a store of value. Value earned today can be kept for later. This job is imperfect because inflation, loss and other risks can reduce purchasing power.

Money is not just the object

A coin, note, bank balance or e-money balance can help perform money’s jobs. They are not identical things.

What matters is the arrangement around them: who issues or records the value, where people accept it, how it moves and what happens when something goes wrong. We will map those differences one small step at a time.

A familiar example

Ana earns ₱1,000. The peso amount helps her measure choices. She can exchange part for groceries and keep the rest for tomorrow. The same three jobs are working together.

One limit to remember

Something can be used for payment without storing value well. Something can rise in price without being convenient money. One label does not guarantee all three jobs.

How this connects to market mastery

Market mastery starts by asking what job an asset is actually doing. Later, this prevents us from confusing a useful payment tool with a speculative trade.

Quick check — no money needed

Name the three jobs of money. Then choose one everyday peso example for each job.

If you can answer that clearly, this lesson is complete.
