Picture a shared notebook
Imagine many computers keeping copies of the same transaction notebook. New entries are checked under agreed rules. Accepted entries become part of the shared history.
A blockchain is more technical than a notebook, but this picture captures the purpose: participants coordinate a record without one ordinary bookkeeper controlling every update.
The picture has three important parts
First, users create transactions. Second, network participants check those transactions. Third, a consensus process decides which valid history the network accepts.
Different blockchains use different rules and participants. “Blockchain” describes a design family, not one universal system.
A familiar example
Paolo sends an asset to Miguel. Their wallet screens are personal views. The blockchain is the shared record that participating computers use to agree whether the transfer belongs in the accepted history.
One limit to remember
A shared record does not make every entry truthful about the outside world. It records what the system accepted, not whether a seller kept a separate promise.
