Why you should know this
“I own crypto” can describe different arrangements. The arrangement determines access, dependence and possible recovery.
Control and ownership are related, but not identical

A private key can authorize transfers from a blockchain address. Whoever controls that key can usually move the associated assets under the network’s rules.
That control is powerful. It does not automatically settle every legal ownership question, especially after theft, shared arrangements or provider insolvency
Custody changes the relationship
In self-custody, you control the signing keys and carry the security burden. In custodial service, the provider controls the keys and credits your customer account.
Custody can offer account recovery and support. It also creates dependence on the provider’s security, operations and terms.
A familiar example

Paolo’s phone shows one crypto balance in a self-custody wallet and another on an exchange. The first depends on his recovery phrase. The second depends on account access and the provider honoring withdrawals.
One limit to remember
Not your keys, not your coins” is a useful warning, not a complete legal analysis. Self-custody also creates serious loss risk when secrets are exposed or lost.
How this connects to market mastery
Custody analysis later affects counterparty risk, exchange flows, settlement and portfolio operations.
Quick check — no money needed

Describe one benefit and one risk of self-custody, then do the same for provider custody.
If you can answer that clearly, this lesson is complete.
