Why you should know this
A crypto asset can be flat in USD but move materially in PHP or JPY because the fiat currency moved. A daily practice should show which part of the local result came from crypto and which part came from FX.
This is a no-money observation exercise. The goal is to produce a record that another careful reader could understand and review later.
The practice sequence
- Record the crypto/USD move over a defined window.
- Record USD/PHP or USD/JPY over the same window, using consistent timestamps.
- Record the local crypto quote if available and compare the direction with the two components.
- Write whether crypto movement, FX movement or both contributed materially.
- Add fees/spread only if the exercise is about executable user outcome rather than reference price.
- State which measurement unit matters to the reader’s actual purpose.
Your market-reading worksheet
| Crypto/USD | USD/PHP or USD/JPY | Local crypto quote | Main contributor | User-relevant unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation |
Keep facts, interpretations and decisions separate. If the worksheet cannot show which is which, the note is not finished.
Worked practice scenario
A fictional crypto asset is unchanged in USD while USD/PHP rises. The peso value of the asset may still rise. The learner labels this as a currency effect rather than saying the crypto asset itself strengthened.
The useful output is not the “right call.” It is a transparent chain from observation to interpretation, with an alternative explanation still visible.
Common practice mistakes
- Comparing a USD close with a PHP quote from a different time.
- Calling an FX-driven local-price move a crypto move.
- Ignoring spreads and conversion costs when discussing a practical route.
- Assuming the same currency effect applies equally to every user.
One risk or limitation
Local crypto prices also reflect venue liquidity, spreads and market segmentation, so a simple FX translation may not explain the entire difference.
How this connects to market mastery
Market mastery is not having a story for every move. It is building a repeatable process, noticing when the evidence changes, and preserving the earlier record so hindsight cannot quietly rewrite the analysis.
Completion check — no money needed

Complete the worksheet using a historical or paper-only snapshot. Then answer four questions:
- Which statements are facts?
- Which statements are interpretations?
- What is the strongest alternative explanation?
- What observable condition would make you change the current view?
If another reader can follow those four answers without knowing the future outcome, the practice is complete.
