Why you should know this
Bitcoin often matters to the broader crypto market, but “BTC moved first” can become a lazy explanation. A useful daily read checks whether the evidence actually supports a Bitcoin-led move.
This is a no-money observation exercise. The goal is to produce a record that another careful reader could understand and review later.
The practice sequence
- Record BTC movement first with a defined timeframe and timestamp.
- Record a broad-market or selected-altcoin comparison over the same window.
- Compare relative performance, not only direction.
- Check whether a common external event could explain both BTC and altcoins.
- Write whether the evidence suggests leadership, broad co-movement or no clear relationship.
- State what later observation would weaken that conclusion.
Your market-reading worksheet
| BTC observation | Alt-market observation | Timing | Relative strength | Alternative driver | Provisional read |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation |
Keep facts, interpretations and decisions separate. If the worksheet cannot show which is which, the note is not finished.
Worked practice scenario

BTC falls 3% after a macro announcement and several large altcoins fall at nearly the same time. The note should not automatically say “Bitcoin dragged altcoins down.” A common event may have affected the entire risk market. Timing and relative movement help separate the stories.
The useful output is not the “right call.” It is a transparent chain from observation to interpretation, with an alternative explanation still visible.
Common practice mistakes
- Treating correlation as proof of causation.
- Using different time windows for BTC and altcoins.
- Ignoring a common macro or crypto-specific event.
- Assuming BTC leadership is equally strong in every regime.
One risk or limitation
Leadership can change by period, asset group and event. A historical relationship is not a permanent rule.
How this connects to market mastery
Market mastery is not having a story for every move. It is building a repeatable process, noticing when the evidence changes, and preserving the earlier record so hindsight cannot quietly rewrite the analysis.
Completion check — no money needed

Complete the worksheet using a historical or paper-only snapshot. Then answer four questions:
- Which statements are facts?
- Which statements are interpretations?
- What is the strongest alternative explanation?
- What observable condition would make you change the current view?
If another reader can follow those four answers without knowing the future outcome, the practice is complete.
