Why you should know this
Cycle labels are useful summaries, but they become dangerous when the label replaces evidence. The exercise is to build the label from observations and keep competing explanations visible.
This is a no-money observation exercise. The goal is to produce a record that another careful reader could understand and review later.
The practice sequence

- Choose a fixed lookback window and record BTC direction, broader crypto direction and relative performance of a defined altcoin basket.
- Record whether participation is broadening or narrowing rather than relying on one token.
- Note changes in volatility and liquidity across the assets being compared.
- If using dominance or breadth measures, state exactly which measure and source.
- Write the provisional cycle label only after the observations.
- Write one piece of evidence that would argue against that label.
Your market-reading worksheet
| Measure | Current observation | Prior observation | Supports label? | Contradicts label? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation | Write your observation |
Keep facts, interpretations and decisions separate. If the worksheet cannot show which is which, the note is not finished.
Worked practice scenario
BTC rises while a small group of large altcoins also rises but most smaller assets remain weak. Calling this “altcoin season” may be too broad. A better note describes concentrated participation and waits for broader evidence.
The useful output is not the “right call.” It is a transparent chain from observation to interpretation, with an alternative explanation still visible.
Common practice mistakes
- Using one outperforming token as proof of an altcoin-wide phase.
- Assuming historical cycle order must repeat.
- Changing the lookback window until the preferred label appears.
- Ignoring liquidity and survivorship differences across altcoins.
One risk or limitation
Cycle boundaries are not objectively fixed, and crypto market structure changes over time. Historical sequences are context, not a timetable.
How this connects to market mastery
Market mastery is not having a story for every move. It is building a repeatable process, noticing when the evidence changes, and preserving the earlier record so hindsight cannot quietly rewrite the analysis.
Completion check — no money needed

Complete the worksheet using a historical or paper-only snapshot. Then answer four questions:
- Which statements are facts?
- Which statements are interpretations?
- What is the strongest alternative explanation?
- What observable condition would make you change the current view?
If another reader can follow those four answers without knowing the future outcome, the practice is complete.
