Philippine Financial Assets Climb to New Highs

The Philippine financial system’s total resources rising by more than 11 percent in the first eight months of 2026, reaching ₱38.6 trillion, up from ₱34.7 trillion in the same period the previous year.

Driven by solid loan expansion, rising deposits, healthy bank earnings, and continued balance‑sheet strengthening among major banks, the growth is a reflection of both the resilience and evolving dynamics of the country’s financial sector.

As the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) continues to monitor systemic risks and guide policy direction, understanding the drivers behind this expansion and the risks that accompany it is essential for policymakers, financial institutions, and market participants.

Resources are Up at a Time of Economic Concerns

The Philippine financial system’s resources grew to ₱38.6 trillion in the first eight months of 2026, marking an 11‑percent increase from the previous year. Excluding the BSP’s own resources, this figure already surpasses the full‑year totals recorded in 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022.

Senior adviser Jonathan Ravelas of Reyes Tacandong & Co. attributes the growth to strong loan expansion, rising deposits, healthy bank earnings, and continued balance‑sheet growth among major banks.

Banks accounted for the bulk of the resources at ₱32.17 trillion, up 12.53 percent from ₱28.59 trillion in January to August 2025.

Universal and commercial banks contributed ₱29.78 trillion, thrift banks ₱1.54 trillion, digital banks ₱225.2 billion, and rural and cooperative banks ₱623.9 billion: all showing significant year‑on‑year increases.

Non‑bank financial institutions (NBFIs) also expanded their resources by 4.7 percent to ₱6.39 trillion, reflecting growth across investment houses, financing firms, securities dealers, pawnshops, lending investors, and government non‑bank institutions.

Ravelas notes that future resource growth will depend on credit demand, interest rates, inflation, and the strength of economic activity, adding that while the pace may moderate, the sector remains well‑capitalized, liquid, and fundamentally sound.

Credit, Deposits, and Earnings Drive the Expansion

Solid loan expansion indicates that businesses and consumers continue to borrow, suggesting confidence in economic prospects. Lending growth typically supports economic activity by enabling investments, consumption, and business expansion.

Moreover, rising deposits show that households and firms are maintaining strong savings behavior, possibly driven by precautionary motives amid global uncertainties. Higher deposits strengthen banks’ funding bases, allowing them to expand lending and investments.

Healthy bank earnings also suggest that financial institutions are benefiting from interest margins, fee‑based income, and diversified portfolios. Earnings support capital accumulation, enabling banks to absorb shocks and comply with regulatory requirements.

Balance‑sheet growth among major banks reflects strategic expansion, improved asset quality, and prudent risk management. As banks grow their assets and liabilities, they reinforce their role as intermediaries in the financial system.

Financial Institutions Uplift the Economy

Banks remain the backbone of the Philippine financial system, accounting for more than 80 percent of total resources.

Universal and commercial banks dominate the sector, contributing ₱29.78 trillion in resources: an 11.8‑percent increase from the previous year. Their growth reflects strong lending activity, diversified portfolios, and robust deposit bases.

Thrift banks, with ₱1.54 trillion in resources, also expanded, indicating continued demand for consumer loans, housing finance, and SME credit.

Rural and cooperative banks saw a remarkable 46.8‑percent increase to ₱623.9 billion, highlighting their growing role in countryside development and financial inclusion.

Digital banks posted the fastest growth at 51.14 percent, reaching ₱225.2 billion in resources. The surge reflects the increasing adoption of digital financial services, driven by convenience, accessibility, and changing consumer behavior.

Digital banks are transforming the financial landscape by offering innovative products, streamlined onboarding, and competitive interest rates.

NBFIs expanded their resources by 4.7 percent to ₱6.39 trillion, according to BSP data.

The sector includes investment houses, financing firms, securities dealers, pawnshops, lending investors, credit card companies, non‑stock savings and loan associations, and government NBFIs such as the Philippine Guarantee Corp. and Small Business Corp.

The growth of NBFIs indicates increasing demand for alternative financing channels, investment products, and specialized financial services. As the Philippine economy diversifies, NBFIs increasingly play an important role in supporting SMEs, facilitating capital market development, and providing consumer credit.

Need for Macroeconomic Monitoring

Ravelas notes that future resource growth will hinge on credit demand, interest rates, inflation, and the strength of economic activity. These macroeconomic factors influence both the supply and demand for financial services.

High interest rates can dampen borrowing but support bank earnings through wider margins. Inflation affects purchasing power, savings behavior, and investment decisions. Strong economic activity boosts credit demand, deposit accumulation, and financial transactions.

The Philippine financial system’s resilience amid global uncertainties, such as geopolitical tensions, volatile markets, and supply chain disruptions, portrays prudent regulation, strong capitalization, and effective risk management.

The Financial Stability Coordination Council (FSCC) has emphasized the importance of monitoring systemic risks as global uncertainties persist.

The FSCC is strengthening its surveillance of non‑bank financial intermediaries, improving data collection, and enhancing information sharing among member agencies.

FSCC’s efforts include assessing liquidity, leverage, concentration, and interconnectedness across banks, NBFIs, corporations, and financial markets. These assessments help authorities understand how risks can spread across the financial system and identify vulnerabilities before they escalate.

In its latest survey, respondents identified geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks, and global supply chain disruptions as key risks requiring close monitoring. These risks urge the need for robust financial stability frameworks and proactive regulatory measures.

Financial System on the Rise, But Not Without Risks

Philippine financial system’s expansion to ₱38.6 trillion in resources reflects strong fundamentals, robust lending, rising deposits, and healthy earnings. The sector remains well‑capitalized, liquid, and fundamentally sound.

To policymakers, it implies the need to maintain prudent regulation, strengthen systemic risk monitoring, and support financial inclusion. It also brings opportunities to policymakers for expansion, innovation, and digital transformation, while it reflects increasing access to financial services, diversified products, and improved financial stability for Filipino consumers.

Growth also brings risks. Rapid expansion can strain risk management systems, expose vulnerabilities, and create pockets of overheating. Policymakers must balance growth with stability, ensuring that financial institutions remain resilient amid global uncertainties.
