Philippine remittances have hit a seven-month high to 3.2 billion US Dollars in July 2026, up 1.9 percent from the previous period covered, according to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Over the seven-month period, remittances have totaled over 20 billion US Dollars—increasing the projections by 2.7 percent to reach 36.6 billion US Dollars.
Resilience of Remittances
Analysts attribute the record high—and its lack of waning—to the resilience posed by cross-border transfers. Although the peso has weakened, this has meant a higher purchasing power brought by those who send US Dollars back home. Moreover, remittances have historically held stable despite conflicts, downturns, and other events. One key reason is the necessity of remittances; where, regardless of conditions, the primary motivator of sending back capital to families in the Philippines does not change.
Remittance Channels are a Hurdle; Regardless, Filipinos Still Remit
Remittance channels have often posed a hurdle to overseas Filipino workers. There are high fees, slow transfer times, and limited access. Especially to the unbanked, they must go through more expensive channels to remit money. Channels have remained mostly the same—however, there have been recent improvements that reduce the friction and pain caused by internation, cross border transfers. A recent innovation has been enabled by the blockchain. Channels like CoinsPH and DOPAY offer lower remittance fees bypassing the SWIFT system.
Importance of Remittance for Loved Ones Back Home
The importance of remittance cannot be overstated. Filipinos who work abroad work for higher wages, facing resilience in the face of cultural differences and a different life. They sometimes sacrifice their quality of life—or at the least, the life separated from their families—to act as breadwinners for their loved ones back home. The largest sources of remittance are the United States, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. Whether one is a nurse in the U.S., a banker in Singapore, or a construction worker in Saudi Arabia, a portion of their salary usually goes back home.
A statistic indicates the key importance of remittances from a micro and macro view. It is estimated that 8.5% of the country’s gross domestic product comes from remittances in 2025, in an analysis by World Bank Group. That means a huge portion of what makes this country run: from purchasing books, to pursuing education, to getting clothes, and so on, is fueled by what families receive from abroad.
Motivations of the Overseas Worker
Remittances are motivated by both a legal requirement that mandates a portion of a salary to be given back home, and the love of those working abroad to give back to their families. Although there have not been definitive sociological studies on the psychology of remittances, many cases observed by the layman is that a worker pursues a larger salary from overseas states to support families back home.
