BDO Network Bank Holds OFW Entrepreneurship Training

BDO Network Bank, the thrift banking arm of BDO Unibank, has intensified its financial education and entrepreneurship programs for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families, showing a growing need for long‑term financial resilience among migrant workers.

The bank recently conducted a two‑day workshop in Silang, Cavite under its Enterprise Development for Overseas Workers and Family Members (ENDOW) program, bringing together returning OFWs, their families, and small business owners supported by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region IV‑A’s Tulong Puso Program.

The initiative forms part of a national effort to equip OFWs with the skills and knowledge necessary to transition from overseas employment to sustainable entrepreneurship and financial independence.

A Helping Hand for OFWs

There is an increasing urgency of OFW financial readiness programs. As global labor markets shift and economic pressures rise, more OFWs are seeking ways to secure long‑term income beyond remittances.

BDO Network Bank’s workshop included comprehensive sessions on entrepreneurship, business registration, labor laws, accounting, cash flow management, taxation, and financing.

Participants also prepared and presented business plans to industry practitioners, demonstrating the program’s emphasis on practical, real‑world application. The workshop encouraged participants to open savings accounts, reinforcing the importance of disciplined financial management.

The program was conducted in partnership with OWWA Region IV‑A, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), local government units, and other organizations, reflecting a multi‑sectoral approach to OFW reintegration.

Agenda of the Workshops

The workshops are designed to be inclusive and accessible. Returning OFWs, OFW family members, small business owners, and beneficiaries of government livelihood programs can participate.

The curriculum is structured to address both foundational and advanced aspects of entrepreneurship, ensuring that participants with varying levels of experience can benefit.

The inclusion of business plan development, financial literacy, and regulatory compliance training ensures that participants are not only inspired to start businesses but are also equipped with the technical skills required to sustain them.

BDO Network Bank’s decision to expand these programs is rooted in its long‑standing commitment to OFW financial empowerment.

As part of the larger BDO group, the bank has historically worked with government agencies to deliver financial education and livelihood programs.

The ENDOW initiative aligns with BDO’s broader strategy of supporting OFWs beyond remittance services, recognizing that many migrant workers aspire to build businesses and secure long‑term financial stability upon returning home.

The bank’s involvement in OFW entrepreneurship programs also reflects its understanding of the unique financial challenges OFWs face, including irregular income cycles, high remittance fees, limited access to financial education, and the pressure to support extended families.

OFWs are the Beneficiaries in Mind

The benefits of these programs to OFWs are substantial. Entrepreneurship training helps OFWs convert years of overseas work into sustainable income streams, reducing dependence on remittances and mitigating the financial shock of returning home.

Many OFWs struggle with reintegration due to lack of savings, limited business knowledge, and difficulty transitioning from employment abroad to local economic opportunities. Through financial literacy, business management, and regulatory compliance learning programs, BDO Network Bank addresses these pain points directly.

The workshops also help OFWs avoid common pitfalls such as poorly planned business ventures, mismanaged capital, and susceptibility to scams or predatory lending.

Common Pain Points for OFWs

More than entrepreneurship and business plans, OFWs face bigger economic pain points in the current Philippine landscape.

Inflation remains elevated, eroding the value of remittances and increasing the cost of living for families back home. Currency volatility, particularly fluctuations in the peso against major currencies, affects the real value of remittances.

OFWs also face challenges related to job security abroad, rising global labor competition, and geopolitical uncertainties that can disrupt overseas employment. Reintegration remains a persistent challenge, with many OFWs returning home without adequate savings or long‑term financial plans.

These pressures portray the importance of programs that promote financial literacy, savings discipline, and entrepreneurial readiness.

Joint Efforts to Address the Problems

Other financial institutions and government agencies have also launched programs to support OFWs.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and BDO have strengthened their partnership to advance OFW financial resilience, offering seminars on personal finance, micro‑insurance, investment strategies, and business planning.

The LIKHA Global Business Plan Competition, supported by DMW and BDO, empowers OFWs to develop business ideas and gain access to mentorship and financial tools.

OWWA and BDO Unibank have also partnered to provide financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and savings tools to OFWs preparing for reintegration, emphasizing the importance of long‑term financial planning and wealth management.

In Cebu, DMW Regional Office VII and BDO Network Bank conducted financial awareness and small business management training for returning OFWs under the Enhanced Livelihood Program for OFW Reintegration (ELPOR), further demonstrating the widespread institutional support for OFW financial empowerment.

These programs collectively reflect a national recognition that OFWs need more than remittance channels—they need structured pathways to financial independence.

As the Philippine economy evolves, OFWs must navigate rising costs, shifting labor markets, and increasing expectations from families who rely on their earnings. Financial literacy becomes essential in helping OFWs make sound decisions about savings, investments, insurance, and business ventures.

Reminders for OFWs include maintaining emergency funds, avoiding high‑risk investments without proper guidance, diversifying income sources, and seeking financial advice from accredited institutions rather than informal networks.

OFWs should also be cautious of scams, pyramid schemes, and unregulated investment offers that often target migrant workers.

Entrepreneurship offers OFWs a viable path toward long‑term financial stability, but it requires careful planning, market understanding, and disciplined financial management. Programs like ENDOW, LIKHA, and OWWA‑BDO partnerships help OFWs build these competencies, ensuring that their years of sacrifice abroad translate into sustainable opportunities at home.

The involvement of banks, government agencies, and private organizations demonstrates a growing ecosystem of support for OFWs seeking to build businesses and secure their financial futures.
