Filipino Brands Go Global as Digital Finance Opens New Opportunities

Going global is no longer a distant dream for Filipino brands but reaching international customers is only the beginning.

Technology has changed the way Filipino entrepreneurs build and grow their businesses. Through e-commerce platforms, social media, digital marketplaces, and online payment systems, even small businesses can now introduce their products to customers outside the Philippines.

For many Filipino entrepreneurs, this creates an opportunity to turn a local business into a global brand. A fashion label, food business, creative service, or online store can attract customers from different countries without needing a physical branch overseas.

However, international expansion also brings new responsibilities. Selling customers abroad means dealing with different currencies, payment methods, transaction systems, delivery arrangements, and cash-flow requirements.

Coins.ph Global Marketing Director Amira Alawi said having a strong product is important, but businesses must also understand how to manage the operations behind the brand.

“Having a great product is only one part of building a brand. You also have to know how to run the business behind it,” Alawi said in an email.

A growing Digital Economy Creates New Possibilities

The Philippines is entering a period where digital technology is becoming a bigger part of everyday commerce. More consumers are connected to the internet, smartphones have become a major tool for online shopping, and digital payments are becoming increasingly available.

The US Department of Commerce’s latest Philippines e-commerce guide, published in June, estimated the country’s e-commerce market at about $28 billion in 2024.

The same report estimated that the Philippines had more than 97 million internet users, with smartphones serving as the dominant channel for online shopping.

This digital environment gives local businesses more ways to reach international markets. Entrepreneurs no longer must depend entirely on traditional stores or large companies to distribute their products.

For Filipino brands, the opportunity can be seen in several areas:

  • Online stores can reach customers in other countries.
  • Social media can introduce local products to international audiences.
  • Digital payment systems can make transactions more convenient.
  • Cross-border financial services can support overseas business activities.
  • Online platforms can help small businesses compete in wider markets.

Coins.ph sees the United States as an important market while also identifying opportunities across Asia, particularly in cross-border payments.

As more Filipino businesses participate in international commerce, financial technology can play a greater role in helping them manage the challenges that come with expansion.

Payments Remain a Major Challenge

While the Philippines’ digital economy continues to grow, payment behavior shows that businesses still face a significant transition.

The Philippine Statistics Authority’s 2024 National ICT Household Survey found that 87.9 percent of online sellers accepted cash on delivery, while 56.5 percent accepted electronic or mobile wallets.

On the consumer side, 97.6 percent of online buyers preferred cash on delivery. Among those who did not use electronic payments for online purchases, 42.9 percent cited security concerns as the main reason.

These figures highlight an important issue for businesses looking to expand beyond the Philippines. International customers may use payment systems and currencies that are different from those commonly used by local buyers.

Businesses therefore need financial tools that can help them manage:

  • Multiple currencies and exchange requirements
  • International payments and transfers
  • Cash-flow timing
  • Transaction security
  • Growing volumes of digital payments
  • Financial records and business operations

Trust is particularly important. Consumers need to feel confident that their money and personal information are protected before they are willing to adopt new payment methods.

For businesses, the challenge is not simply accepting payments. They must also ensure that money can move efficiently through the business without creating unnecessary costs or delays.

Alawi said digital finance can help reduce these operational difficulties, allowing entrepreneurs to focus more on building their brands.

“I think that’s important because we want our local brands to spend their energy growing the brand, not getting slowed down by the mechanics of doing business.”

Coins.ph Expands Globally While Strengthening Its Philippine Base

As Coins.ph looks at opportunities outside the country, the Philippines remains central to its strategy.

Alawi said the company continues to see the Philippines as an important market and plans to invest in areas that can support the country’s growing digital financial ecosystem.

“The Philippines is such an important market for Coins.ph, so there’s a real commitment to continuing to invest here,” she said.

The company cited continued investments in technology, infrastructure, security, compliance, and services for businesses.

Coins.ph said it processed $20 billion in total volume in 2025 and has more than 5 million verified app users.

The company expects future growth to be supported by the Philippines’ increasing connection to the global economy. Growth in users, business accounts, and transaction volumes could also follow as digital financial services become more common in everyday transactions.

Alawi also pointed to the potential of USDT and stablecoins, particularly as Filipinos become more comfortable using digital assets for practical financial needs.

“We also see strong potential in USDT and stablecoins as Filipinos become more comfortable using digital assets for practical financial needs,” Alawi said.

The broader direction reflects a shift in how Filipinos may use digital finance not only for trading or investment, but also for payments, transfers, and other practical financial activities.
