Trendsetter QR Ph: PayMongo States 9 out of 10 Transactions is thru QR Ph

PayMongo’s midyear 2026 data reveals that QR Ph has overtaken cards and e-wallets as the dominant payment method in the Philippines, accounting for 55% of all payment volume through the platform—a 510% year-on-year surge.

Findings of PayMongo also states that QR Ph and e-wallets combined account for 76% of total payment volume and 9 in 10 transactions, a signal that Filipino merchants are becoming mobile-first.

PayMongo provides a financial operating system for businesses, enabling them to accept payments, move money, and access credit through a unified platform.

Its merchant base grew by 93% year-on-year, processing nearly 10 million transactions in the first half of 2026.

The most striking finding is the rise of QR Ph, which now commands more than half of all payment volume, surpassing cards and e-wallets combined.

Cards, once dominant, fell to 19% of volume, while e-wallets held 21%.

Everyday transactions—food delivery, sari-sari store purchases, utility bills—have migrated almost entirely to QR Ph and wallet payments, indicating a behavioral shift toward mobile-native finance.

QR Ph: A Government Initiative Done Right

QR Ph, launched by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), is the national QR code standard designed to unify payments across banks and e-wallets.

Its interoperability means that a single QR code can accept payments from multiple providers, eliminating fragmentation and simplifying transactions for merchants and consumers.

The Philippine Payments Management Inc. (PPMI), recognized by the BSP, manages retail payment systems including InstaPay, PESONet, and QR Ph. PPMI ensures interoperability, security, and efficiency, making digital payments accessible nationwide.

Together, QR Ph and PPMI form the backbone of the Philippines’ digital finance infrastructure, enabling seamless transactions across platforms and driving adoption at scale.

GCash and Maya remain dominant in the e-wallet space, with GCash reporting over 79 million users in 2025 and Maya surpassing 60 million accounts. Both platforms have integrated QR Ph, reinforcing its ubiquity.

UnionBank and BPI have expanded QR Ph adoption in physical retail, while PayMongo’s data shows in-store QR Ph transactions tripled year-on-year.

This convergence demonstrates that QR Ph is not just an online phenomenon but a nationwide standard reshaping both e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retail.

The rapid adoption across platforms signals that QR Ph is becoming the default payment method for Filipinos, and its dominance signifies macroeconomic implications.

First, it accelerates the velocity of money, allowing funds to circulate more quickly through the economy. This boosts consumption, supports SMEs, and enhances overall economic resilience.

Moreover, it strengthens transparency, as digital transactions create auditable trails that reduce opportunities for fraud and tax evasion.

QR Ph’s uprising also aligns with the government’s digitalization agenda, enabling faster disbursement of subsidies, aid, and public services.

Furthermore, the rise of QR Ph democratizes access.

Small businesses, which previously struggled with fragmented payment systems, can now accept digital payments seamlessly. This levels the playing field, allowing micro and small enterprises to compete more effectively in the digital economy.

Finance is Undergoing a Dramatic Transformation

Several factors explain the Philippines’ heightened use of digital finance platforms.

The pandemic accelerated digital adoption, forcing consumers and businesses to transact online.

BSP’s Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap set a target of converting 50% of retail payments to digital by 2023, a goal surpassed ahead of schedule.

Fee waivers and reduced transaction costs by banks and e-wallets removed barriers to adoption.

Convenience also plays a critical role. Mobile-native payments are instant, interoperable, and secure, making them the preferred choice for everyday transactions.

The rise of QR Ph, with its simplicity and universality, has further accelerated this shift.

And with the evolving nature of digital finance landscape in the Philippines, platforms and providers alike must also transform to align with the needs of users.

Digital finance platforms must ensure consumer trust to sustain adoption. Compliance with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) regulations, transparent fee disclosures, and strong data privacy protections are essential.

Platforms like PayMongo, GCash, Maya, and DOPAY are licensed by the BSP, ensuring secure transactions.

By offering user-friendly interfaces, fraud detection, and customer support, these platforms encourage continued use and reduce reliance on cash.

Consumer protection is not just regulatory compliance—it is a competitive advantage that builds loyalty and confidence in digital finance.

Crypto Meets QR Ph

The expansion of QR Ph to include cryptocurrency payments represents a structural shift in how Filipinos use digital assets.

Coins.ph, a BSP‑licensed Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) and Electronic Money Issuer (EMI), has integrated Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and stablecoins like USDT and USDC into the national QR system.

This means that consumers can scan a QR Ph code at any merchant and pay directly with crypto, with balances automatically converted into Philippine pesos.

This integration eliminates volatility concerns and makes crypto practical for daily use. Instead of being limited to speculative trading, digital assets now serve as a medium for buying food, paying bills, or shopping at local stores.

The Philippines, already one of the world’s largest crypto markets with over 15 million users and $38 billion in annual remittances, is uniquely positioned to benefit from this innovation.

The link between QR Ph and crypto addresses several challenges.

It provides a seamless bridge between fiat and digital assets, allowing remittances sent in stablecoins to be spent directly in pesos without extra conversion steps.

The linkage also democratizes access to crypto utility, making digital assets relevant to everyday Filipino life rather than niche speculation.

Moreover, it strengthens BSP’s financial inclusion agenda by ensuring that crypto transactions are regulated, transparent, and interoperable with existing payment systems.

Platforms like Coins.ph have demonstrated that crypto can coexist with national payment infrastructure.

By embedding crypto into QR Ph, they ensure that users can transact securely under BSP oversight. This development also pressures other e-wallets and payment providers to explore similar integrations, expanding consumer choice and reinforcing the Philippines’ role as a global leader in crypto adoption.
