Rainy Season in The Philippines, PAG-ASA states incoming inclement weather

Is it already the “Rainy Season” in the Philippines?

The current month, July, is a known rainy season in The Philippines. PAG-ASA, a national weather forecast agency under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), cites June as the start of Rainy season here in the country.

According to the agency, the country has two seasons: The Rainy Season, which normally begins in June and ends in November, and The Dry Season, which starts from December to May.

During the Rainy Season, many areas in the country experience frequent rain, extreme humidity, thunderstorms, and tropical cyclones. The country is more prone to typhoons, specifically because of the geographic location of the country: near the western Pacific Typhoon Belt, a region where warm ocean waters meet hot air, creating conditions to develop tropical cyclones.

This pattern can be seen in the Rainy Season, especially when the country experiences “Habagat”, a local term for southwest monsoons. The Habagat brings hot tropical air from the ocean and while travelling closer to the country, it fuels typhoon systems.

The month of June has passed and as August is fast approaching, PAG-ASA has released a Tropical Cyclone (TC) Threat Potential for July 22 to August 4, 2026. While the forecast shows no current and ongoing typhoons, a tropical cyclone-like vortex has been identified and has a moderate to high chance for tropical cyclone development and has a chance to landfall on Northern Luzon.

In a press release from ABS-CBN, a local television news source, the number of tropical cyclones expected to hit the Philippines on the second half of the year amounts to 13 tropical cyclones. The news release was published on June 24, 2026, and the movement of tropical cyclones is still subject to change.

For Filipinos, continuous early preparation is recommended. Staying alert to weather forecasts, community bulletins, and preparing necessary kits are needed to stay safe and warm during inclement weather.

What happens when its Rainy Season in the Philippines?

Filipinos, being adaptive and resilient, has long adapted to the two seasons of the country. By June, Filipinos start to use umbrellas, boots, raincoat, and other protective gears to prepare for strong rains and wind. In summer, the protective gears are then switched with summer-coded things, such as slippers, sandos, shorts, umbrellas, and hats to normally be used to protect skin from the strong rays of sun while wearing clothes intended to feel less heat.

However, despite the raincoats, jackets, and boots, the frequent typhoons experienced by Filipinos create widespread damage in terms of agriculture, fisheries, transportations, housing, and power supply. Outside of severe damage, frequent rain and typhoons also have an impact on ordinary workers throughout the country.

The daily struggles of Filipinos in Rainy Season

The typhoons and frequent rains have such impact on the daily lives of Filipinos especially in the working sector. On July 20, 2026, PIDS released an article addressing the concern “When Rain Falls, Work Slows: Rainfall Variability and Working Hours in the Philippine Labor Market,” and stated that farm laborers, fishery workers, construction laborers, and transport workers are among those most affected by weather-related reductions in working hours. Challenge in navigating rain and flooded areas often leads to paralyzed and slow mobility of Filipino worker commuters. Not to mention, navigating the wet and slippery roads may require special services such as hailing taxis, cabs, moto-taxis, and other vehicles for commuting.
Walking is also non-negotiable. For many cases, roads which are flood-prone may not be passable; floods often accumulate and depending on areas, floods can accumulate to unpassable heights for walking; making passing a challenge for both commuters and drivers.

If caught unlucky by sudden weather change, commuters and drivers often end up stranded on roads and roadside, with no choice but to wait until rain subsides. The frequency of rains are just few factors for this daily struggle, but poor urban planning resulting to rapid flooding, long queues for commute, damaging of goods and supplies, and possibility of contracting flood-borne diseases complete the picture of struggles for ordinary Filipinos.

How do Filipinos complete their errands during Rainy Season?

During the rainy season, cancelling errands is inevitable. Most especially for errands that require physical appearance such as banking, shopping, remittance, etc. The hassle for physical commuting during strong rains are often not worth it for Filipino Commuters.

Instead, there are increased chances that Filipinos will reschedule their respective errands so to not get caught up in the strong rains. The original plan to complete certain errands will now be rescheduled, on a day that is hopefully sunny with clear skies just to avoid the hassle of doing the errand while experiencing inclement weather.
