The Philippine stock market is expected to face another data-driven trading week as investors closely monitor several economic indicators that could influence market sentiment and investment decisions.
Among the most anticipated releases are the country’s July inflation rate and second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP), alongside production and employment figures from the United States. These reports are expected to provide valuable insights into the health of both domestic and global economies.
Aside from macroeconomic data, investors are also preparing for another wave of first-half corporate earnings reports from major Philippine listed companies.
The combination of economic releases and earnings announcements is expected to shape trading activity as market participants assess potential opportunities and risks. Analysts believe that investors will remain cautious until clearer signals emerge regarding inflation trends, economic growth, and the future direction of monetary policy.
Inflation, GDP Figures as Influencers of BSP Policy Rate
Market observers are paying close attention to the country’s inflation and GDP data, which could affect the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) next monetary policy rate adjustment decision.
According to online brokerage platform 2TradeAsia.com, a stronger inflation rate could strengthen the case for another policy tightening, while weaker economic growth may reduce investor confidence in the local equities market.
“Higher-than-expected July inflation might support the case for possible rate hike from the local central bank. A lower-than-expected 2026 GDP could lead to tempered portfolio exposure in equities,” the brokerage platform states.
The brokerage added that the BSP’s policy direction may continue to move in line with the U.S. Federal Reserve’s, as central banks across the region monitor global inflation and interest rate developments.
Because inflation remains a major concern worldwide, investors are expected to evaluate every new economic report carefully before making significant portfolio adjustments.
Higher Interest Rates Continue to Direct Market Sentiment
Interest rate expectations remain one of the primary drivers of financial markets as inflationary pressures continue to influence central bank decisions around the world.
“Futures are now leaning toward a hike by September, pressured by oil keeping CPI [consumer price index] too sticky for the Fed to even entertain easing, and that same dynamic is what is driving the region. We thus expect yields to stay firm, the peso to hold up reasonably well because the BSP is matching the Fed’s hawkishness, and risk sentiment to stay choppy through August on rate-path uncertainty alone,” it added.
If interest rates remain elevated, borrowing costs for businesses and consumers are likely to stay high. Higher rates also tend to support bond yields while making equity investments relatively less attractive, resulting in cautious trading behavior.
Although market volatility may continue in the near term, analysts believe investors will continue looking for fundamentally strong companies capable of performing well despite a challenging economic environment.
Fiscal Concerns Remain Part of the Investment Picture
Aside from inflation and interest rates, investors are also monitoring the country’s fiscal position as lawmakers consider tax reform proposals aimed at supporting households and small businesses.
Among the proposals are increasing the income tax exemption threshold and exempting small businesses from the minimum corporate income tax.
While these measures could improve disposable income and encourage business activity, they also come at a time when the national budget deficit has already reached approximately ₱800 billion.
According to 2TradeAsia.com, these developments could have long-term implications for financial markets.
“We think this combination raises sovereign debt supply risk over time, which tends to translate into upward pressure on benchmark yields and some multiple compression for equities, even if the tax relief itself is popular and positive for household consumption,” it said.
Should government borrowing increase further, bond yields could rise, placing additional pressure on stock valuations despite the potential economic benefits of tax relief.
Defensive Stocks and Earnings Reports Take Center Stage
Given the current macroeconomic environment, market analysts continue to recommend a cautious investment strategy.
2TradeAsia.com advised investors to focus on defensive stocks while favoring quality banking institutions that could benefit from a prolonged period of relatively high interest rates. Banks generally perform better in higher-rate environments as wider lending margins may support profitability.
At the same time, attention is shifting to the ongoing corporate earnings season. Several major Philippine companies are scheduled to release their first-half financial results this week, including International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), Maynilad Water Services Inc., Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC), Universal Robina Corp. (URC), China Banking Corp. (Chinabank), and DMCI Holdings Inc.
The financial performance of these companies could influence investor sentiment across their respective sectors and provide additional insights into how Philippine businesses are navigating current economic conditions.
The Energy Industry Continues to Attract Positive Outlook
Renewable energy remains one of the sectors attracting investor interest.
Abacus Securities Corp. maintained its “buy on weakness” recommendation for SP New Energy Corp. (SPNEC), citing continued progress in the development of its Terra Solar project.
According to the brokerage, the project is expected to begin commercial operations in September or October, allowing the company to charge higher electricity rates compared with its current commissioning phase. Production has already reached 151 gigawatt-hours (GWh) since late March, and operations are expected to continue expanding through 2027.
As the project moves toward full commercial operations, analysts believe it could strengthen SPNEC’s long-term growth prospects and contribute to the country’s renewable energy capacity.
